BROWN COUNTY (KSNT) – Brown County Sheriff John D. Merchant shared a warning with locals as temperatures are expected to go into the triple digits Thursday.

Merchant said 10 minutes or less in a hot car can be deadly with heatstroke possible to happen at temperatures as low as 57 degrees.

“Too many child deaths occur in the United States due to children being forgotten by adults or they were playing in cars and were unattended by an adult,” Merchant said. “With the upcoming heat wave, there is a great potential for deadly heat build up inside vehicles.”

Merchant asked citizens to be vigilant and notify law enforcement if they see a child or pet in distress. 27 News took a dive into whether it’s legal to break into a vehicle to rescue pets or children: for more information, click here.

Merchant told citizens to be aware of the signs of heatstroke:

Confusion

Grouchy or irritable

Nauseous

Red, hot and moist or dry skin

Not sweating

Throbbing headaches

Dizzyness

Merchant said 30% of child deaths are from kids playing in vehicles unattended. He said 20% are intentionally left in vehicles by adults.

Very hot Thursday, heat advisory in effect

“In most cases of child deaths in cars, the child was forgotten by the parent or caregiver,” Merchant said.
