The man was trying to leave with items he didn’t pay for when three bystanders intervened about 10 a.m. at the store on North El Camino Real.

A 25-year-old man was arrested Saturday after reportedly stabbing someone who tried to stop him from stealing at a Home Depot in Encinitas.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Giovani Pantoja said the man was trying to leave with items he’d thieved when three bystanders intervened about 10 a.m. at the store on North El Camino Real.

Once confronted, the man pulled out a knife, stabbed one of the bystanders in the leg, and fled, Pantoja said in a news release.

Responding deputies applied a tourniquet to the injured person’s leg and the individual was taken to a hospital, Pantoja said. But they couldn’t find the alleged assailant.

Deputies returned to the Home Depot to search for more evidence and were told a man matching the suspect’s description was in the area, officials said. He was later taken into custody on Anillo Way east of El Camino Real in Carlsbad.

The man suffered unspecified injuries while deputies tried to take him into custody, and he was later booked into Vista jail on suspicion of charges that included assault with a deadly weapon and petty theft shortly before 4 p.m., according to booking records.
