BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Pride Month is an annual celebration of the many contributions made by the LGBTQ+ community to history, society and cultures worldwide.

In most places, Pride is celebrated throughout the month of June each year in commemoration of its roots in the Stonewall Riots of June 1969. And Capital City Pride is happening now in Bismarck.

“Pride is just a celebration of togetherness and inclusivity and diversity and family and chosen family. Everybody should have a right to love. And [be] able to celebrate who you are,” share Elaina Poitra and Robert Massie, vice president and president of Dakota Outright respectively.

Pride celebrates togetherness in the community and is important to many on a personal level as well.

“For me, pride really means to celebrate who I am and be comfortable in my own skin. And feel accepted and know that there’s people out here who are just like me, finally feeling accepted for who they are, who they love. Just being able to be who we are and be proud of it,” comment Poitra and Massie.

Events kicked off Friday with a riverboat cruise, a dance for adults, bowling, and a prom for those 18 and under.

On Saturday, a special gathering was held at McQuades Softball Complex, including a vendor and an award show. Dakota Outright also holds other events for those in the LGBTQ+ community throughout the year.

“We try to do monthly, so like either game night or Q-space meetings for the younger generation. And then all of these people here all support us in different organizations,” say Poitra and Massie.

Up next for Capitol City Pride will be a multi-faith service and potluck that begins Sunday at 11:30am at Lions Park. All are welcome to attend.
