HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — On Saturday, June 16, Hopewell Police Department hosted an anti-theft steering wheel lock giveaway for residents that own a Kia or Hyundai.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 15, the Hopewell Police Department held an event providing residents in the city with steering wheel locks. The event took place at the Hopewell Municipal Building at 300 N. Main Street.

8News spoke with Captain Trevor Terry from Hopewell Police Department about the police department’s efforts to enhance vehicle security among the community.

“We reached out to Hyundai and Kia and they were so gracious enough to send us 240 steering wheel locks, so we could help the citizens prevent the theft of their valuables,” said Terry.

According to the police department, this event is in efforts to decrease car thefts in the community.

“From June 1, 2023 up until May 15 [2024] when these stats were printed, we had 46 Hyundai’s that were stolen, 22 Kia’s and 28 other vehicles that were stolen,” Terry said. “So we’ve seen an uptick from previous years where Kia’s and Hyundai’s were only at about 8 vehicles stolen and the other vehicles were at about 41. There’s new technology out that people are using to steal these cars, so we just wanted to give out another piece of security for our citizens to have.”
