BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Rural firefighters in North Dakota were mustering the courage to take on a trial by fire.

With water ball fights, inflatables, and pizza from DJ’s Tavern, today marks the third annual Bismarck Rural Fire Muster, a way for the community to connect with first responders.

“This was our way of giving back to the community,” says Bismarck Royal Firefighters Association president Joe Scharvat.

Formally known as the Bismarck Royal Firefighters Association Appreciation (or BRFA) Event, firefighters met at 10:30 this morning to face off in a water ball fight.

Armed with their trademark hoses, firefighters from Bismarck Royal Fire and Sterling Fire had to advance a moving keg to win a shiny gold trophy and well-deserved bragging rights.

But the fire muster was more than just a display of strength.

Thanks to the event’s numerous sponsors like Lincoln Community Club and Maple View Memory Care, children could learn how to fight fire with the “Spray House,” and families could win big prizes like handguns, long guns, cash, and more.

The crowning jewels, however, were the Bobcat and walk-behind mower.

But the BRFA president believes the event offers a lot more than just a few nice prizes.

“We wanted to make sure it was not just an adult-oriented event,” says Scharvat. “That’s why we had the inflatables, that’s why we get those, and we have those here, so the kids can see that. They always love spring water with the spray house and seeing fire trucks. What kid doesn’t like to a fire truck?”
