HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has reported a fishing trip to Banister Lake ended with three people dead when their boat capsized on June 16.

DWR says around 8:41 p.m. on Sunday, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was informed that three people were missing on Banister Lake after a boating accident. Investigators currently believe that 20-year-old Zacharich S. Carter of Virgilina, 30-year-old Dre’ D. Tucker, of Halifax, and 22-year-old Elijah L. Tucker of Indian Trail, N.C. were fishing in a 14ft aluminum Jon boat when they maneuvered sharply, causing the rear end to drop under the water line.

The boat sank and ejected the three victims into the water. They all died at the scene.

DWR says the incident is still ongoing; however, none of the victims were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

In addition to DWR, numerous agencies responded to the scene and assisted in the search including Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, Halifax County Emergency Services, Halifax County Rescue Squad, North Halifax Volunteer Fire and EMS, Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office, Mecklenburg County EMS, Town of Halifax Police Department, South Boston Police Department, Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department, Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire and EMS, Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department, South Boston Fire Department, Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department, and Virginia State Police Aviation Division and Search and Recovery Team.
