NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — It’s now less than a month until the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

But just days before the convention begins, former president Donald Trump has a sentencing date following his felony trial in New York City.

While several Republicans called for moving up the convention date, Shane Goettle, who serves on the national committee in North Dakota says that won’t happen.

He says the party still intends to formally nominate Donald Trump for the presidency in Milwaukee, and he says what’s likely to happen is the court case in New York is likely to be tied up in appeals for months.

“I just don’t think that the judge is going to provide some jail time for this, maybe it’s also a fine, but consider the appeals as well that are ongoing, and could be that the appellate court intervenes and says, ‘look, we’re going to let the appeals run before any sentence is imposed,’ and that’s a possibility as well,” Goettle said.

The convention runs from July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

Former president Trump already won the North Dakota caucus, winning 29 delegates in the state.
