MINOT, ND (KXNET) — A school district’s Superintendent is retiring after nearly 14 years, and some students and teachers are sending him off with a special present, for who they call, The Greatest of All Time or ‘The GOAT.’

The Superintendent of Minot Public Schools, Dr. Mark Vollmer, was gifted two baby goats, one named Happy and the other named Retirement.

Dr. Vollmer has spent 35 years in education, 22 of those in Minot, and almost 14 as Superintendent. But he is a rancher at heart.

Some friends and teachers say the two goats from Mohall, are the perfect addition to Dr. Vollmer’s new retirement lifestyle since he now plans to help out on his son’s ranch near Willow City.

“We should quit calling them baby goats and call them kids because that’s what this is all about. They’re kids for Dr. Vollmer so he’s not lonely when he’s retired because that’s the hardest part to retirement. It’s saying goodbye to the kids,” said a retired teacher from Minot Public Schools, Patrice Mitchell.

Dr. Vollmer has accomplished a lot during his time as Superintendent.

He said maybe his greatest accomplishment is helping pass the bond issue to build Minot North High School. That new high school is set to open this fall.

The school board has selected Scott Faul as the district’s new Superintendent.
