CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The winners of Virginia’s Primary election are now readying themselves for the 2024 general election in November.

8News Analyst Rich Meagher said that in addition to the congressional races that have now been set, voters should also consider some key issues ahead of November, one of them being how few people came out to vote on Tuesday.

“Voters just have a tough time getting out to vote when it’s not in November,” Meagher said. “Considering the sheer number of candidates in some of these races, I think there’s nothing encouraging, at least about the really low numbers we saw today.”

On Tuesday, June 18, Meagher called out an especially low turnout for the Primary Election.  He said, given what people were seeing on the ballot, it shouldn’t have happened.  The races included a neck-and-neck race between incumbent Bob Good and his challenger John McGuire, who is former president Donald Trump’s pick.  National analysts like Meagher are watching this race closely as a potential litmus test for November. Plus, a senate matchup now set between Republican pick Hung Cao and U.S senator Tim Kaine.  And come November, Meagher said that some of Virginia’s key issues will more than likely be the same nationally.  “So reproductive rights is going to be really, really important. I think democrats are going to push it,” Meagher said. “And republicans may have a response.”   Voters at Manchester Middle School said regardless of the issue or who is on the ballot, voting is a power that always needs to be exercised.   “I vote every time. So many people died for the right to vote. It’s very important. Make your voice heard. It’s important that you take that not for granted,” Melissa Laverne Allen said.
