RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A new restaurant co-owned by one of the owners of The Shaved Duck in Chesterfield County is serving up fresh flavors in Richmond’s Fan District.

Trouvaille, whose name translates to “lucky find” in French and was inspired by a nearby alley with the same name, is located at the intersection of North Lombardy Street and Grove Avenue in the heart of Richmond’s Fan District.

The restaurant, which opened in late April, is operated by Chef Joe Kmetz, who used to own The Shaved Duck in Chesterfield, and General Manager Jennie Garriques, who has worked at several Richmond restaurants including Capital Ale House and Curbside Café.

Kmetz and Garriques described the food at Trouvaille as “new American,” but also said the menu is largely inspired by what they like to eat.

“We have everything on [the menu], from a duck dish that is pretty French-inspired in technique,” Kmetz said. “And I just made a batch of kimchi the other day, so we’re kind of all over the place.”

The building occupied by Trouvaille was previously home to several restaurants, including Balliceaux and Poor Boys, both of which hosted events and concerts on a stage located in the back of the space. Kmetz and Garriques decided to get rid of the stage and said the change has been met with positive reception from the neighborhood.

“We didn’t really want to do anything music, we wanted to focus on food and be really cocktail-forward,” Garriques said. “The music wasn’t really taken with open arms. It was almost a divide, almost a nuisance. Because at night, it’s really quiet around here.”

Trouvaille is open Tuesday through Sunday, opening at 4 p.m. and closing at 9 p.m. on weeknights and at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Trouvaille’s full menu can be found on the restaurant’s website.
