TOPEKA (KSNT) – One local group is looking to reduce violent crimes in Topeka and Shawnee County.
The Community Inspired Violence Intervention Coalition (CIVIC) is a program put on by the YWCA of Northeast Kansas. 27 News spoke with the director of operations, Courtland Davis, about the initiative on Friday.
“Violence it spreads almost like a virus,” Davis said. “It’ll start in an area, and then it’ll spread from there. It can even jump to different parts of the city. All it takes is for one that leads to another that leads to another.”
Davis says CIVIC’s ultimate goal is to intervene on the cycle of violence. One way they do that is by getting community feedback.
“The people most likely to experience violence,” he said, “are also the people who are going to have the best understanding on how to change those incidents.”
CIVIC has three upcoming town-hall style events called ‘Action Planning Sessions.’ All are welcome and the events include prizes, food, and activities for any kids in attendance. Details can be found in the flyer below.
