Byron Spinks: Indigenous guardians in permanent, full-time positions would develop fire management plans and weave together traditional knowledge and Western science.Former chief Byron Spinks had so little time to escape to safety when a wildfire roared through the village of Lytton in June 2021 that he ran from his house in stockinged feet. Checking the rear-view mirror in his truck as he raced away, he saw his home explode in a fireball of super-heated air. Most of the town was destroyed in minutes.
