COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — The Tri-City Chili Peppers and Cosmic Baseball have everyone talking—from SportsCenter to Barstool Sports and even the official MLB X account.

“Before fans even get here, they are all excited. They want to see it, they want to see if guys can actually do it,” said Chris Martin, the Owner of the Chili Peppers. “And then when you see the first ball get put in play, both games, the first ball was put in play, I think the fans just erupt. They’re like, ‘Holy crap, this is real. We can do this.'”

The idea is simple, baseball played under black lights. Making it happen was no simple task though, according to the team.

“It started circulating that if we install black lights we can play real baseball,” explained Martin. “That’s where it started to snowball — we needed to create out own lights because black lights did not exist that were large enough to light a stadium like this. So we had to create black lights with federating lighting and sonar ray.”

All that hard work has paid off. The Chili Peppers have completely sold out all their cosmic baseball games this summer. Bobby Asycew, a Chesterfield County native who plays for the Chili Peppers, said playing under the black lights has been one of the highlights of his career.

“This has never been done before,” said Asycew. “This was just the second cosmic game ever, the other night, and it’s honestly one of the coolest things ever.”

Tickets for cosmic baseball in 2024 have already sold out, but don’t worry—there are still plenty of chances to catch the Chili Peppers in action at Sheppard Stadium later this season.
