DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — NHRA legend John Force remains in the ICU for treatment of his injuries following a “catastrophic engine failure” that resulted in an explosion during the Play NHRA Virginia Nationals on Sunday.

During the first round of Funny Car eliminations at the PlayNHRA Virginia Nationals on Sunday, June 23, Force’s funny car exploded at the finish line, then crossed the center line and crashed into both guard walls.

Force was stabilized at the scene, then taken to a local hospital via medical helicopter for treatment.

On Monday, June 24, John Force Racing took to the social media platform X to update the public on Force’s condition following what it called a “catastrophic engine failure.”

“Attending doctors purposefully were moving slowly in assessing the extent of the injuries to the Hall of Fame owner and driver because of the intensity of the impact,” John Force Racing said in its statement. “Medical staff will not provide a treatment and recovery timetable until a total evaluation is completed.”

According to the statement, updates on Force’s condition will only be provided at the discretion of medical staff.

Members of Force’s family — his daughter Brittany, her mother Laurie and her sisters Adria and Ashley — are with Force at the hospital.
