Surveillance video on Detroit’s west side captured the moment a 36,000-pound fire engine crashed and sent three people to the hospital.
It happened just before 5 p.m., Monday, June 24, at the intersection of Livernois and Grand River avenues. It’s the latest crash in a string of crashes involving the Detroit Fire Department.

The video shows Detroit Fire Engine 37 smashing into two cars, which go spinning after being struck by the massive rig.
Engine 37 was responding to two house fires on Roselawn Street when the crash happened. A person in each car was taken to the hospital and a firefighter was also injured in the crash.
All three people are expected to recover.
Authorities said the driver of Engine 37 was not at fault for the crash and tested negative for drugs and alcohol, but he also was allowed to drive the fire engine back to the shop — a violation of department policy. That call was made by a supervisor on the scene.
Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms has responded to questions regarding the crashes and said additional driver safety training would happen.
