CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. American and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday.

The order was issued in observance of Patriot Day, in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed. On December 18, 2001, the Congress designated September 11th of each year as “Patriot Day,” as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”

The order calls for the flags to be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday.

Many local communities are holding events in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the tragic events on September 11, 2001. A moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. is being observed nationwide to honor the victims when the first Twin Towers were struck. Americans may hear bell tolls occur at key moments throughout the morning at 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m., each signifying significant events from that tragic day.

Amherst: North Fire Station on E Pleasant Street at 9:45 a.m.

Pittsfield: Veterans Memorial Park at 10 a.m.

Springfield: Riverfront Park at 6 p.m.

Westfield:

Westfield Fire Department on Broad Street at 9:45 a.m.

Westfield Police Department on North Elm Street at 11 a.m.

Sons of Erin on Williams Street at 6 p.m.

Westfield State University on the Campus Green, located in front of the Ely Campus Center from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

West Springfield: Town Common on Park Ave at 8:30 a.m.
