ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Fair is about halfway over. Much has been said about the Cartoon Poodles and the Speakeasy at this year’s event, but there are staples of the State Fair that have been around for decades and truly showcase the unique qualities of the people around the state. Below is our guide to things you should plan to see if you’re heading to the New Mexico State Fair.

Model Railroad Display

On Main Street, across from the Manuel Lujan building, is a small room with a tiny city displayed behind windows. The Rio Grande Model Railroad has been delighting enthusiasts and casual train fans at the fair since 1956. Club members are on hand to answer any questions and visitors of all ages enjoy seeing the level of detail and craft that goes into the display. Club member Joe Fileberk says that even though the track layout has remained pretty much the same over the years, advancements and changes have happened as new technologies, like LED lights, have become available.

Opening in 1972, Villa Hispana and the Indian Village are a couple of areas off the beaten path that showcase the culture and food of the Native and Hispanic people of New Mexico. Visitors can enjoy musical performances and Native dances throughout the day.

Even though the allure of a Slush Puppy stand on the way back from the Indian Village is tempting to hit up, it’s what is found behind it that is the real gem. The Flower Exhibit shows off the best local growers have to offer. You can check out all kinds of beautiful, award-winning flora grown in the Land of Enchantment.

Well, not exactly “beef” yet, but this is where you can get up close and personal with some of the bovines that have come to the big city to show off their “udder” beauty.

Home & Creative Arts

Wondering where the student art pieces that were next to the Flower Exhibit went? Me too! They can be found in the Home & Creative Arts exhibit if you head east at the Manuel Lujan building before you turn to go to Tingley Coliseum. You’ll find Lego sculptures, quilts, table-setting displays, and more!

Separate from their respective villages, the Native American Indian Arts and Hispanic Arts galleries allow the public to get up close and purchase authentic pieces of art.
