Hawaii faced Sam Houston in its first road game of the 2024 season.

The University of Hawaii football team stumbled in a loss at Sam Houston on Saturday, falling to the Bearkats 31-13 in a discouraging effort.

After falling at home to UCLA, the Rainbow Warriors faltered on the road on Saturday, committing 14 penalties for 122 yards as a team.

The Bearkats ran for 257 yards compared to Hawaii’s 56 and were the more physical team on Saturday despite making the transition from FCS to FBS in 2023.

The Rainbow Warriors could only muster three points in the first half, falling behind 17-3 at halftime. UH appeared to have momentum in the third quarter when the Rainbow Warriors converted twice on fourth down en route to a 5-yard touchdown from Brayden Schager to Pofele Ashlock, but the ‘Bows never got closer than 17-10.

Sam Houston continued to pull away behind two touchdown receptions from Qua’Vez Humphreys, who hauled in a total of four passes for 106 yards.

For Hawaii, a hobbled Schager completed 21 of his 42 passes for 252 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Defensively, Peter Manuma and Jaheim Wilson-Jones each had a game-high six tackles for Hawaii, while Houston native Cam Stone had an interception for the ‘Bows.

The Rainbow Warriors will return home and face Northern Iowa on Sept. 21, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
