KILAUEA, Hawaii (KHON2) — A 4.5 magnitude earthquake stemming from the Summit Region of Kilauea Volcano poses no tsunami threat to Hawaiian islands, according to the Maui Emergency Management Agency.
MEMA issued the alert shortly before 4:30 p.m. informing residents that “shaking may have been felt in some areas, but a tsunami was not generated.”
The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released the following parameters:
Origin time: Sept. 14, 2024 at 4:35 p.m.
Coordinates: 19.4 North 155.3 West
Location: Summit Region of Kilauea Volcano
Magnitude: 4.5
According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the earthquake did not have any apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes.
Reports said the earthquake’s characteristics are related to the “ongoing pressurized magma storage system beneath Kilauea’s summit area where intrusions of magma have recently occurred.”
Within the first 30 minutes of the earthquake, several aftershocks were detected. Officials said the aftershocks are expected to be minor but can continue from days to weeks.
