BOSTON (SHNS) – Casino gambling and sports betting generated more than $136 million in revenue for operators last month, with nearly $36 million of that tabbed for the state’s coffers.

Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett together counted approximately $103.28 million in gross gaming revenue during August, with almost two-thirds coming from Encore ($64.9 million), the Gaming Commission said Monday in its monthly revenue report. The physical sportsbooks at those locations produced an additional roughly $381,000 in revenue last month while the seven legal online betting platforms offered here counted revenues totaling $32.9 million, the commission said.

The Plainville slots parlor is taxed at a rate of 49 percent of its gross gaming revenue, and the two full-scale casinos pay a 25 percent tax on their gross gaming revenue. For August, that worked out to about $29.3 million for the state, the commission said. Revenues from brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are taxed at 15 percent while online gambling revenues are taxed at 20 percent. The commission said August’s sports betting resulted in almost $6.65 million in state taxes.

Bettors in Massachusetts risked about $444.9 million on sporting events that took place in August, with more than 98 percent of that in wagers placed over the internet rather than in-person. That’s up from about $305.7 million wagered in August 2023.

Since legal gambling began here in 2015, the state has collected $1.849 billion in taxes and fees from casino-style gaming. It has also taken in $173.25 million in taxes and assessments from sports wagering operations that became legal in 2023, the commission said.
