ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two guns were found at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque and a student was taken into custody on Tuesday, according to Albuquerque Public Schools.
One of the guns was loaded and was confiscated from the student’s backpack. The other gun was found in the student’s car, school officials said. All students and school staff are safe.

“First and foremost, I want to reassure you that the student found in possession of the gun did not express any intentions of harming himself or others. Nevertheless, the presence of any weapon on school grounds is a serious violation of our policies,” Principal Melissa Sedillo wrote in a letter to parents on Tuesday.
Sedillo said APS police, Albuquerque Police, and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident. “The student who brought the guns is facing severe consequences, up to and including expulsion and potential prosecution,” Sedillo wrote.
School staff did not elaborate on the type of guns that were found but did thank the “individual” who alerted them to the situation.
Separately, law enforcement investigated a threat against Volcano Vista High School that was posted on social media and found it not credible, according to APS. As a precaution, there will be an increased presence of APS and APD police on campus for the rest of the week.
