Meteorological Department Announcement No. 8 on Tropical Depression 19 – 22 Sep 2024, heavy rain in Thailand

At 4:00 a.m. today (September 19, 2024), the depression over the upper South China Sea has its center approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Quang Tri City, Vietnam, or at latitude 17.5 degrees north, longitude 110.0 degrees east, with maximum wind speeds near the center of approximately 55 kilometers per hour. This storm is moving west at a speed of approximately 20 kilometers per hour.

This storm will intensify into a tropical storm today (19 Sep 2024) and is expected to make landfall in central Vietnam during 19-20 Sep 2024, after which it will gradually weaken. In addition, a fairly strong monsoon trough is passing through the lower northern, central and northeastern regions. This will cause Thailand to have more rain during 19-23 Sep 2024, with heavy to very heavy rain and strong winds in the northern, northeastern and central regions.

Including Bangkok and its vicinity, the Eastern region, and the Southern region, people in the aforementioned areas should beware of the dangers of heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rain, which may cause flash floods and forest runoff, especially on hillsides, near waterways, and low-lying areas.

In addition, during 19-22 September 2024, the strong southwest monsoon will cover the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. This will cause heavy to very heavy rain in some areas of the South. The waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will be strong. The Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves 2-4 meters high. In areas with thunderstorms, the waves will be higher than 4 meters.

The lower Gulf of Thailand has waves approximately 2 meters high. In areas with thunderstorms, waves are higher than 2 meters. Sailors in the aforementioned areas are advised to sail with caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms. Ships in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are advised to refrain from sailing from shore during the aforementioned days and times.
