Italy has become the latest country to be hit by Tropical Storm Boris, after the low-pressure area caused widespread flooding in central and eastern Europe, killing at least 23 people.

Foreign news agencies reported that a low-pressure area called “Storm Boris” hit northeastern and central Italy on Thursday, September 19, 2024, just days after the same storm caused heavy rain and flooding in Central and Eastern Europe, killing 23 people and injuring dozens.

More than 1,000 people in the northeastern Emilia-Romagna region have been evacuated after authorities declared a red flood warning and warned of landslides. Schools across the region have been temporarily closed, some roads have been cut off by landslides and train services have been severely disrupted.

Faenha was hit the hardest after two rivers that cut through the city rose rapidly overnight, with the city of Bologna, near Faenha, saying river levels were under control early Thursday. However, weather warnings for most regions will remain in place until Friday.

Meanwhile, several towns in the Marche region were hit by severe flooding, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths.

Falconara, a popular tourist destination on the Adriatic coast in the Marche region, has been hit by 204mm of rain since Wednesday – more than three times the September average of 67mm. The rain is set to ease on Friday and throughout the weekend, but the risk of flooding remains.

Also on Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced €10 billion in aid for flood-hit countries.

Ms von der Leyen’s announcement comes after she met with the leaders of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria in Wrocław to discuss aid for flood-hit countries that have been battered by Tropical Storm Boris over the past week.
