ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a fatal crash involving a Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy. Albuquerque police and BCSO didn’t agree on what initially took place and now for the first time, KRQE News 13 is seeing body camera footage from the night and hearing from the deputy.

“It’s going to be 45-0, vehicle stopped in front of me, causing me to crash into it,” said the deputy involved.
That was the radio call moments after crashing into a car near Edith and Alameda Road. The crash then turned to for the worse.
“Not conscious, not breathing,” the deputy said in his radio.
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Alexandria Gerard, then crashed into a wall and died. APD and BCSO disagreed initially on what happened and now KRQE News 13 is hearing from the deputy involved for the first time. KRQE News 13 is not naming him as the investigation into what happened is ongoing.
During his interview with APD’s fatal crash investigator, he said he was on patrol when he first noticed the silver car with no plates and cutting off a car nearly side swiping it.
“I catch up to the vehicle and activate my emergency equipment. The vehicle doesn’t stop then takes off at a higher rate of speed,” said the deputy.
He said he caught up with the car and tried to conduct a traffic stop when the crash happened. “I don’t see a turn signal, I don’t see anything, the vehicle just seemed to slow down abruptly and I hit the back of it. My airbags deployed. I don’t lose consciousness or anything, it hits me,” he explained.
He said the car then accelerated at an angle and hit a nearby wall. “I get out of my vehicle, I have my firearm drawn because I feel they did that intentionally to disable my vehicle,” said the deputy.
He said he soon realized the driver was injured and holstered his weapon. He tried to pull Gerard out of the car to render aid, but she was pinned.
“Are you with me? Are you with me?” he can be heard saying on his body camera.
He waited for backup to come and then was sent to a substation for a drug test while other law enforcement investigated the scene.
BCSO said the deputy involved is still on administrative leave as APD investigates if any crime occurred. BCSO said it has not received APD’s crash report. KRQE News 13 reached out to APD to see when the report could be completed, APD responded saying the crash is under investigation.
