Deep behind the ground’s haunted woods, through the tall rows of corn and underneath the thick darkness of the night, folks at the Double M Haunted Hayrides were in for a frightening surprise.

“Around every corner, you never know what’s coming to get you,” said Max Martin, the general manager of Double M Haunted Hayrides and Haunted Houses.

Max said this is something that they begin preparing for as soon as the snow starts to melt in the winter. It’s a nearly year-long process that he believes has become an upstate New York staple.

“We’ve become a tradition here in upstate New York, I know some people from out of state travel here now, we’re like a staple we have to be here,” said Max.

It’s become a tradition that many people can’t pass up.

“We always come on opening day for the haunted hayride, it kicks off our Halloween season,” said Amy and Doug, who were dressed in cloaks to attend Saturday night’s attractions. “Very excited, we look forward to this all year. The second we see the emails go into our email box, we’re right there, picking the tickets,” said Amy.

People come from near and far, all to get a taste of the thrills.

“We wanted to get scared,” said Kensington alongside her group of friends at the haunted attractions. “And we wanted to have fun too.”

While some customers said they weren’t afraid, others feared more than they could’ve imagined.

“I was scared. I fell over on my butt. I wanted to go like sit in a corner and cry but like its okay,” said a group of friends, Jess, Carson, Sam, Megan, and Maddy.

Double M has six haunted attractions for customers to test their scare tolerances on, including the Haunted Hayride, Brutality, Blood Moon Farm, The Last Inn, Slaughter Swamp and a new one, the Doom County FEARgrounds.

The Doom County FEARgrounds was added this year. It mimics a carnival, with spooky surprises inside.

“It’s a walk through the carnival and the rest awaits you,” said Max. “No fun, no games, absolutely not, all fear.”

These mazes of horror will be open for 17 nights of thrills. It will continue until the first week of November. Anyone interested in a good scare, can buy their tickets online.
