Driving around in the States in the summer used to result in dead bugs smashing into the front end and windshield of a car, dramatically reducing visibility. Here’s a recent story from Florida about how ‘love bug’ splatter can erode the paint on a car.

In Thailand today, one can drive for hours and get only one or two windshield bug smears. This is really counterintuitive since there are soo many bugs in the environment.

I thought this was a function of technological aerodynamics — the flow of air over a car’s outer shell…until I saw this Florida ‘love bug’ story.

What’s happened to windshield bug splatter?
