Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. American and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. American and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday.

The order was issued to honor Private First Class Erwin King of Clarksburg, who died in the 1942 Allied forces assault on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. King served in the United States Marines, Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division during World War II.

PFC King’s remains were identified in May 2024, 82 years after he was killed. A plane carrying his remains arrived at Bradley International Airport Friday afternoon. A procession was held through Clarksburg until the arrival at the funeral home in North Adams.

Visiting hours are being held Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Flynn and Dagnoli Funeral Home located at 521 West Main Street in North Adams. Service hours will be held on Tuesday starting at 11 a.m. and he will then be laid to rest at the Southview Cemetery in North Adams with full military honors.

The order calls for the flags to be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, the date of interment.
