A state route in Wilson County is being called a major safety concern.

WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A state route in Wilson County is being called a major safety concern.

On Saturday, a witness shared the terrifying moments when a car swerved into the opposite lane which caused several cars to collide, then took off.

“It is dangerous, and people are not paying attention, and I think that’s really what it comes down to,” Heather Donnelly said.

Donnelly and her sister were driving on State Route 109, going northbound, when she said a gray SUV swerved into the opposite lane. “I got out of the way and saw debris flying in the air. I stopped pulled over, called 911, and checked to make sure everyone was ok.”

She said two cars were totaled and a third had minor damage. Two people were transported to the hospital.

Donnelly said the driver took off. “As far as I know, I figured they just kept going southbound on 109. I don’t know where they ended up, I just know they didn’t stop.”

She said this accident now begs the question: what can be done on this state route? Earlier this month, a husband and wife were killed on this stretch of road after a speeding driver swerved into the opposite lane and hit them head-on.

“It seems like it has been a problem for a while. It seems like generally it’s been an issue.”

Because of this, Donnelly said she plans to get a dash camera. She is also asking people to pay closer attention on the roads. It’s something she believes the driver was not doing.

“I erroneously called them out for being on their phone. But that might have been the case. Whatever they were doing they were not paying attention to the road because they couldn’t have possibly drifted that far out of their lane if they were. But I think that’s what it comes down to when you’re driving. Be aware when you’re driving,” Donnelly said.
