MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – In response to recent security incidents, Central Kentucky school districts are taking new measures to ensure student safety. Starting this week, Montgomery County has implemented a ban on backpacks at McNabb Middle School and Montgomery County High School following an incident last week where a student allegedly brought a loaded gun to school.
The new policy, effective from Monday, restricts students from carrying backpacks and requires those with athletic equipment or musical instruments to use secured drop-off locations. The decision comes after classes were canceled last Friday due to rumors circulating on social media.
Superintendent Matt Thompson announced an increase in security presence at the schools and revealed plans for a special called school board meeting set for Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 PM. The meeting will discuss the implementation of a new security program that includes a robust crisis alert system, an enhanced visitor management system, a school mapping component, and other security measures.
Following the special meeting, the regular school board meeting at 5:30 PM will further address long-term security options, including the potential introduction of metal detectors to enhance school safety protocols.
