The city is embarking on a special census to get an accurate population count to assist in better planning for infrastructure, facilities, and services.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Franklin residents will soon see special census mailers appearing in their mailboxes, city officials announced.

The city is embarking on a special census to get an accurate population count to assist in better planning for infrastructure, facilities, and services, according to a press release.

An updated and accurate population count will also mean an increased amount of state-shared revenues for the City of Franklin.

Goodlettsville hopes to confirm increased population with special census

The need for the special census comes from the significant growth in population since the 2020 Federal Census, according to city officials. They said they believe Franklin should receive more revenue from the State since the population has grown so much.

Currently, the city receives an approximate $175 per person in state-shared revenue, according to city officials.

Census forms will be mailed to every household in Franklin in early October. Residents may also visit the city’s website to complete a form online starting Oct. 1.

“It’s important that every person is counted,” City Administrator Eric Stuckey said. “It only takes a few minutes to fill in the form. The only information we need is the first and last names of everyone in each household. This information is vital for us to get the City’s fair share of money from the state of Tennessee to pay for services to serve our growing population. The information required from citizens is very limited and the City is committed to protecting it appropriately.”

Lebanon expected to receive addition $1M from state following special census

Every household that does not respond either by mail or online by Oct. 25 will be visited by a census taker to collect the necessary information form that address. All census takers will be City of Franklin employees and will wear bright yellow vests and have a city identification badge.

If residents have any questions about the Franklin Special Census, they can email specialcensusintake@franklintn.gov or call 615-767-0513.

Franklin is one of several Middle Tennessee communities to announce they’ll hold a special census. Smyrna, Gallatin, and Goodlettsville are also holding special censuses. Lebanon also conducted a special census from October 2023 through March 2024 that netted the city nearly $1 million more from the state.
