CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina will feel impacts from Hurricane Helene through Friday morning as the storm makes landfall in Florida and moves north through Georgia.
Heavy rain, strong gusty wind, flooding, and a tornado risk are the areas of concern across the Lowcountry over the next several hours.
With that potential for tornadoes, it’s important to know where to go and what to do if a warning is issued where you are.
First, a car is not a great place to be. Your best bet will be an interior room of a well-constructed home or building. This is where you want to shelter if a tornado warning is issued in your area.
Your goal is to get as many walls between you and the outside of your home as possible. Stay away from doors and windows.
“The interior room will be the safest place to go,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
A tornado WATCH is issued when a tornado is possible. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for much of the Lowcountry earlier in the day.
A tornado WARNING is issued with a tornado is happening or about to happen. This is when you react quickly and immediately go to your safe place until the warning is over.
Have a way of being notified if a tornado warning is issued. A NOAA weather radio, or the Storm Team 2 and News 2 apps are great options to receive alerts. Search WCBD in your app store and be sure to turn on location settings and your alerts.
