The crash caused a temporary closure of the northbound lanes of Fort Weaver Road. The lanes have since been reopened.

Officials from the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division and Vehicular Homicide Section reported that the 29-year-old driver was speeding north on Fort Weaver Road when he lost control of the vehicle.

The driver then swerved right onto the unimproved roadway and went airborne before colliding into a tree.

After the collision, the car overturned multiple times and struck a street sign before coming to a stop.

Bystanders were able to get the man out of his car and he was transported to an area hospital in critical condition by paramedics. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office later said the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
