LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) —- Celebrations are in order for Isabel Yates. Lexington’s former vice mayor turns 100 years old today, and she’s celebrating with friends and family.

“I have a good family, and I’m in pretty good health, to be 100 years old,” Yates said.

Yates was the first female vice mayor of Lexington; she’s well known for her community service and volunteerism in the city.

“Well, I love to be of service of course, and I love my city, and I want to do the best for it,” she said.

From advocating for LexArts, to McConnell Springs, the Lexington Opera Society and more, Yates took her various passions and brought them to the city.

“Urban county government was good to me, and I think I was a leader for them,” Yates said.

Now, outside of work, Yates is the leader of her family.

“I have four children and eight grandchildren; can you believe it? It’s wonderful,” she said.

Yates’ love for her family, community service, education and musical theater has stayed strong, even at 100 years old, but her days look a little different than they did before.

“I just have a lot of fun with people, I love people, I play bridge sometimes, I think I play a pretty good game of bridge so that’s fun,” she said.

Happy 100th birthday, Isabel Yates.
