BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Each year Belchertown High School athletes take part in a little friendly competition to raise funds for a charity of their choice.

On Wednesday night, the school’s football and field hockey team battled it out as they fought for a cure, benefiting the American Cancer Society.

This year’s charity game hits especially close to home.

“We played for Julia last year, and she lost her battle with cancer, it was very hard on the whole entire school,” shared Natalie Haluch, Belchertown High School Senior.

Once again, the community of Belchertown is facing hardship. Wednesday night, the two teams played for their classmate Hannah Racine, a Senior at Belchertown currently battling cancer.

Though the community and student-athletes are determined to make a difference through the love of the game and a little rivalry.

“I mean I’m totally confident, it doesn’t matter about experience. Well actually it does, but you know what we got it,” shared Peter Root, Belchertown High School football player.

The two teams playing for Hannah, meanwhile raising awareness. Prior to Wednesday night’s game, the field hockey team raised nearly $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The Head Coach of the Varsity Field Hockey team is proud to be a part of the charity game for her second season leading this group of athletes, “Probably every single person in here is affected by cancer. From the children all the way up to every adult walking in here, just we all need to support each other.”
