A historic United States port strike has been suspended and a tentative agreement has been reached after a three day stoppage.

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) – A historic United States port strike has been suspended and a tentative agreement has been reached after a three-day stoppage.

The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance have agreed to a tentative deal on wages. The move ended a strike that had affected East Coast and Gulf Coast ports since the beginning of the week and threatened the U.S. supply of fruits, automobiles, and other goods. The strike impacted operations at 14 different ports, but the concerns are not over yet.

“It’s very difficult to reroute all these things I mean some things can come through the West Coast but that’s a whole different logistics and you have a lot of people like truck drivers and companies that depend on a regular supply of materials,” Professor of Economics and Finance at AIC, John Rogers.

Rogers said food prices may have gone up if the stoppage had been prolonged. With the new tentative deal, ILU wages will increase by 61.5% over six years.
