Capital District Transportation Authority buses will soon look a little different as the organization continues to implement a new safety system.
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Capital District Transportation Authority buses will soon look a little different as the organization continues to implement a new safety system. The CDTA has removed side mirrors from two of their buses and using video monitoring instead.
The agency has been testing the video monitoring system for more than a year, but the mirrors stayed on the vehicles as a backup. The system is made up of two cameras on the side of the bus with two video monitors near the driver’s seat.
Officials said the early returns have been positive.
“Given the number of mirror incidents that we have given the need to improve safety all the way around for everyone in the Capital Region,” CDTA CEO Carm Basile said. “This just makes common sense to us.”
The cameras work at any time of the day or night and in any weather condition. Buses will also be equipped with a third camera that detects pedestrians.
