COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10) — October is National Pedestrian Safety Month. Officials said everyone must follow the rules of the road, especially during the school year.

Drivers are required by law to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and should be especially careful when driving by schools and playgrounds. Pedestrians should look both ways before crossing the street even if they’re at a crossing signal.

The Cohoes Police Department has taken extra steps to keep students safe on the way to and from school.

“We would want to take the children on the tour of the routes that they’ll be taking when they go from one school to the next,” Cohoes Police Chief Todd Waldin. “So, we go out with the students, and we actually walk those routes with them, so they’re more comfortable and knowledgeable about how to cross the street.”

Police around the state are also adding patrols during the month of October in areas where pedestrian safety needs to be improved.
