Springfield police have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning on Hancock Street.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning on Hancock Street.


Springfield sees second homicide in less than a week

On Friday, October 4, at approximately 9:45 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, assisted by the Massachusetts State Police arrested 68-year-old Erving McLeod near the intersection of Knox and Mill Streets.

McLeod was arrested in connection with a Wednesday, October 2 shooting.

Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Hancock Street around 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday after a ShotSpotter activation. Officers found an adult male with gunshot wounds at the scene. The victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, initiated an investigation and identified McLeod as a suspect on Thursday. Detectives located and arrested him on Friday morning.

McLeod is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Monday. He is charged with:

Murder

Carrying a Firearm without a License

Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License

Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building

Firearm-Armed Robbery

Default Warrant

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.
