Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Monday.

BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Monday.

October 7th marks one year since Hamas attacked Israel

Flags will be flown at half-staff on Monday in memory of those killed in Hamas’ attack on Israel one year ago, October 7, 2023.

“One year ago today, the terrorist group Hamas launched a horrific, indefensible attack on the people of Israel, as well as hundreds of Americans peacefully living there. Since that day, terror, grief, and trauma have continued to reverberate throughout the Jewish community, coupled with a rise in antisemitism and hate both here in Massachusetts and across the globe,” said Governor Healey. “Each step of the way, I have been inspired by the resilience of Massachusetts’ Jewish community, which has come together with kindness and compassion to support each other in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Today, our hearts are heavy for those who have lost loved ones at the hands of Hamas. We remain resolute in our commitment to working toward the release of the remaining hostages and peace in the region.”

Over 90 hostages remain in captivity, including four Americans, but it is unknown how many are alive. In the past year, over 40,000 thousand Palestinians in Gaza have been killed according to the Ministry of Health. Millions have also been left without a home and hope for a ceasefire has diminished.
