BRAINTREE, Mass. (WPRI) — New England Patriots safety and captain Jabrill Peppers was arrested in Braintree over the weekend after an alleged assault, according to police.

Officers responded to a report of an altercation between two people at a residence early Saturday morning.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Peppers was arrested and charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of cocaine.

The victim was treated at the scene, police said, but the extent of their injuries are unknown.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating. We will have no further comment at this time,” a statement from the team said.

The 29-year-old was originally listed as questionable for Sunday’s home game against the Miami Dolphins due to a shoulder injury but was then downgraded to out. It’s unclear if the team was aware of his arrest when they ruled him out.

In court, Peppers’ attorney said they have evidence that contradicts the victim’s story.

Peppers pleaded not guilty and was issued a no-contact order. He is due back in court in November.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
