HONOLULU (KHON2) – It’s “Fire Prevention Week” in Hawaii. This year’s theme is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You.”
The Honolulu Fire Department said most fire-related deaths in the U.S. happen because the home did not have a working smoke alarm.
Having one reduces your chance of dying by 50%. When it comes to smoke alarms, HFD said you should have one in every room, every hallway and every floor of your home.
On Saturday, the Honolulu Zoo will host a Fire Prevention Week Family Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participation is free, but zoo admission is required. Kama’aina and military discounts are available.
There will be fire and life safety information and activities available. There’s also a meet-and-greet with the Fire Safety mascots at noon. The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform at 11 a.m.
