As Hurricane Milton makes its way toward Florida’s west coast, residents and city officials are preparing for widespread destruction. The storm has been labeled as “extremely dangerous” after quickly gaining strength to as a Catergory 5 hurricane. 
It has since weakened to Category 3, however forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said the hurricane is “growing in size” as it moves towards Florida Wednesday afternoon. “Life threatening storm surge” and “damaging winds” are expected. With Milton’s quick intensity earlier this week, MySA spoke with local meteorologists to get their take on this season’s big storm. 
News 4 San Antonio chief meteorologist Chris Suchan describes Milton as record-setting. He said it’s the strongest hurricane they have had in the Gulf of Mexico this late in the season.
“In fact, latest we’ve had a hurricane with 175mph winds in the Atlantic basin was Hurricane Rita, September. 22, 2005,” he told MySA. “Keep in mind, reliable records only go so far back with satellite imagery and data collection, observations.”
