VOLCANO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island police have charged the man involved in a 24-hour barricade standoff in Volcano that left one officer hospitalized.

On Friday, officials announced 58-year-old Puna man, Shawn Page, with an array of offenses. He is charged with three counts of attempted murder, terroristic threatening, criminal property damage, criminal trespassing and firearm offenses.

The incident began on Wednesday when police received reports of Page in a residence that was supposed to be vacant.

Police later learned Page “was wanted for questioning for a previous incident involving his dog.” When officers attempted to remove the dog from the property, Page pulled it into the home, locked himself inside and verbally threatened officers while possessing a firearm.

Members from Big Island Police’s Special Response Team attempted to communicate with Page. Reports said he remained uncooperative and began shooting towards officers.

The standoff continued overnight through Thursday, Oct. 10 and Page shot at officers on three separate occasions.

Around 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, the Special Response Team entered the home. Page then shot at officers. One member of the team fired back and all officers retreated safely.

While firing his weapon, Page was able to escape from the back of the property. In the midst of the chaos, one Special Response Team member was injured from broken window glass.

Officers began searching the area and were able to locate Page several hundred yards away from the residents hiding in vegetation and was found with a loaded pistol.

Page remains in custody at the East Hawaii Detection Center in Hilo and is held without bail. He will make an initial court appearance on Monday in South Hilo District court.
