After a beautiful summer-like weekend here in Central and Eastern Kentucky with highs around the 80 degree mark, we got a dose of reality to kick off the week. A much anticipated frontal boundary moved through late Sunday ushering in much cooler air and a change in our weather pattern. After some sunshine early, a decent cloud deck filled in through the late morning. A brisk northwest wind added additional coolness to the air holding afternoon highs into the mid to upper 50s. It’s time to bring out the jackets as you’ll need them from time to time the next few days.
An upper level wave of energy will drop through the Ohio Valley into Tuesday bringing clouds, a few showers and chilly temperatures even for mid-October. After starting the day in the low 40s thanks to some cloudiness moving in, look for a raw day overall on Tuesday with mostly cloudy and breezy conditions along with showers from time to time. You’ll want to dress accordingly as temperatures will struggle to get into the mid 50s for afternoon highs but it will feel even colder thanks to the wind.
Heading into the mid-week some of the clouds may linger long enough to prevent frost from forming into Wednesday morning but there is still the potential as temperatures drop into the low to mid-30s. Even with sunshine returning Wednesday, cold high pressure will remain in control so afternoon highs will continue to be a solid 15 degrees below average with readings hanging in the mid-50s.
The unseasonably chilly air may linger a bit longer so it appears frost may be on the table for Thursday morning. If you have any outdoor plants that you want to hang onto for a bit longer you’ll want to plan on covering them up or bringing them inside. We’ll have 3 morning with temperatures well down into the 30s and we are right around the time that we typically see our first frost of the season.
The rest of the week and into the weekend so be ideal for those longing for fall weather. High pressure will remain in control so expect sunny, pleasant days and clear and chilly nights. Temperatures will slowly moderate heading toward the weekend with afternoon highs climbing back around the 70 degree mark so our weather should be perfect for any outdoor activities for the weekend ahead.
