DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)- Some Dorchester County residents are raising concerns after officials say duplicate ballots for the 2024 general election were mistakenly mailed to a couple hundred voters.

James Meadows and his wife have always voted by mail and are doing the same this November. But after recently returning their ballots, the couple said something surprising happened.

“We requested this year, same as always, and we got one set of ballots in and actually mailed them out,” Meadows said. “And the same day, we received another pair of ballots.”

He said he immediately contacted the county board of elections to report the issue and was told to destroy the extra set.

The Meadows are just two of roughly 200 registered voters who received more than one absentee ballot for the upcoming general election, according to officials.

“It’s a big concern,” Meadows said. “We’re all concerned about this election — Democrats and Republicans. And I just don’t want to see somebody out there campaigning at the county level and lose by 50 votes or something, and it turns out those 50 votes were 50 extra ones.”

County officials said a systems issue could have caused the error, but they are working with the state to verify exactly how it occurred.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.
