Fishtales Restaurant, a local favorite in Hatfield, has transitioned to new ownership.

HATFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Fishtales Restaurant, a local favorite in Hatfield, has transitioned to new ownership as longtime executive chef Kerianne Kelliher and her business partner, Frank DeMarinis, officially purchased the business on October 11.

The sale includes both the restaurant and the building at 5-7 School Street, which also houses the Hatfield Post Office.

Kelliher, who has been with Fishtales since 2012, first as general manager and later as executive chef, is now stepping into ownership. She takes over from previous owners Michael and Marilyn Fitzgerald, who are retiring. Kelliher has deep ties to the restaurant industry and to the Hatfield community. Raised on Cape Cod and a 2008 graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School, she comes from a family with a long history in the restaurant business, including her father and grandfather, who each spent decades in the industry.

“I am always looking for new and creative ways to present farm-fresh food to our customers,” said Kelliher, reflecting on her early inspiration from her grandfather at the Black Dog Tavern on Martha’s Vineyard. “The people of Hatfield and surrounding towns are so special to me. I am excited to continue to support them, as they have supported me.”

Kelliher’s leadership at Fishtales will continue the restaurant’s tradition of offering affordable, homemade meals, ranging from burgers and pasta to steaks and fresh seafood. The restaurant is known for its $6.99 fish and chips daily lunch special. Kelliher also emphasizes local sourcing, often receiving produce delivered directly by farmers, reflecting her commitment to the community.

A unique aspect of Fishtales under Kelliher’s ownership is its women-led kitchen team. Both of Kelliher’s sous chefs, Jennifer Duffy and Meaghann O’Neil, are women, with a combined 74 years of restaurant experience between the trio. In an industry often dominated by men, Kelliher takes pride in fostering a supportive environment for women in leadership roles.

“My father has been a huge inspiration for me,” Kelliher shared. “He has always said never settle for less than success, let your imagination be your guide, and though none of us are perfect, we must keep striving.”

Kelliher’s co-owner, Frank DeMarinis, is a longtime friend and local developer. DeMarinis, owner and president of Sage Engineering and Contracting in Westfield, brings a wealth of business experience to the partnership. He recently acquired Schermerhorn’s Restaurant in Holyoke, another former Fitzgerald family-owned establishment, and became a partner of the Log Cabin Delaney House Hospitality Group.

“I invest in people, not businesses,” DeMarinis said, explaining his decision to partner with Kelliher. Fishtales is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Monday, closing on Tuesdays. For more information, visit their website.
