Schenectady police and fire departments joined forces on Wednesday in the Battle of the Badges to raise awareness for the need of blood donations.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Schenectady police and fire departments joined forces on Wednesday in the Battle of the Badges to raise awareness for the need of blood donations. The two agencies participated in a blood drive held in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

According to the Red Cross, the national blood inventory is low, and after Hurricane Milton, local officials said the need for blood is greater now more than ever.

“Because of the storm, over 100 locations weren’t able to have their event, so at last count, they are about 2,500 units short, so it’s very important that this event take place,” Schenectady Fire Chief Donald Mareno said.

The agency that has the highest volume of donated blood will win the friendly competition. The department with the least will be making a donation to the other agency’s choosing.
