COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Colleton County officials will meet with business owners in unincorporated areas of the county to discuss a new ordinance for late-night operations.

The ordinance, passed on July 25, 2023, requires these businesses to apply for a permit application and submit safety plans to operate past midnight. An open house will take place Thursday afternoon to allow business owners to ask questions.

“We’re really hoping that we can get these business owners involved,” said KC Campell, public information officer for the county. “The county does not have a business license policy, so this is a way that we’re able to try to interact with some of these businesses that operate well outside normal business hours.”

The county does have a late-night establishment preclearance ordinance that applies to businesses that are open after midnight and serve alcohol.

“Some of the things we’re going to be talking about are safety plans, how they can apply for this letter to the county for review,” said Campbell.

The ordinance includes a $250 fee, and officials said having this in place lets law enforcement know which businesses are legally serving alcohol and open after midnight.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at County Council Chambers in Walterboro.
