COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man who died after being shot by a Colleton County deputy has been identified, according to the coroner’s office.

32-year-old Joseph Horan V died following the incident with the deputy, the Colleton County Coroner’s Office said.

Walterboro police and Colleton County deputies responded to a disturbance Tuesday night in a parking lot off Sniders Highway near a Best Western and Ruby Tuesday, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

The sheriff’s office said they were called to assist officers as the subject, identified as Horan, was vandalizing vehicles in the parking lot by slashing their tires and breaking windows.

When deputies arrived, one engaged with Horan, asking him to drop the knife, the agency explained. Horan refused and then allegedly went to attack the deputy.

The deputy fired, and Horan was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to investigate.

The deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave but has not been identified.
