SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is scheduled to hold a news conference to highlight the ongoing efforts to identify and curb illegal dumping throughout the city.
The Parks and Recreation Department has several security cameras installed at various sites that are monitored for illegal dumping activity. The news conference will be held at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday at Forest Park with Mayor Sarno, Director of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management (PBRM) Thomas Ashe, and members of the police department will be at Forest Park.
Mayor Sarno states, “Smile, you are on Springfield’s candid camera. I want to thank and applaud PBRM Director Tom Ashe and his team and our brave and dedicated men and women in blue for their continued efforts in identifying these culprits who feel that it is ok to dump their trash in our parks and throughout our City of Springfield. We are going to remain vigilant to ensure everyone understands illegal dumping will not be tolerated in the City of Springfield. We are continuing to monitor problem areas and violators should be aware we will catch up with you, so think twice. This program will remain a priority for my administration and we will provide the necessary resources to ensure all violators are prosecuted.”
For items that do not fit in the trash carts, Springfield residents can purchase additional trash bags for $2 each or bulk item stickers for $8 each at Big Y or City Hall. To schedule a bulk pick-up, call 413-736-3111.
Examples of bulk items include refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, chairs, tables, cribs, couches, bed frames, sofas, fans, filing cabinets, TVs, plumbing fixtures, doors, windows, bicycles, barbecue grills, mattresses, box springs, large toys, tires, lawn mowers, snow blowers, stoves, washers, dryers, rugs, etc. Rugs (must be cut up into 4 to 5-foot lengths, rolled, and tied.)
